Q. What is the status of the proposed Oak Flat land exchange?

RCM, a joint venture of two of the world’s three largest mining companies, has for several years sought to acquire the Oak Flat campground and environs from the federal government by means of a legislative land exchange, in order to mine a large, deep deposit of copper and molybdenum. Beginning in 2005, legislation has been introduced every year in Congress which, if passed, would allow Oak Flat to be conveyed to RCM. RCM intends to mine in a way that eventually would collapse parts of Oak Flat, The Mine Area and Euro Dog Valley.

The current version of the Oak Flat land exchange bill is H.R. 1904, introduced by Arizona Rep. Gosar in May 2011.
